The Algarve is situated on the southwest tip of Portugal and is one of the worlds most poplar holiday destinations. The popularity of the region is partially accounted for by the 300 days of sunshine per year– which means outdoor activities are possible all year round – from water sports to more leisurely activities (the region has 21 gold courses alone and received the an award for being the premier Gold Destination of the year 2000). In addition, main attractions include the white, clean, sandy beaches, food and ample tourist facilities. Faro is the capital of the Algarve and most tourists enter the region via Faro international airport. Faro with its sandy beaches is an important destination for those who like to spend some (or perhaps all) of their time lying back in a lounger, absorbing rays and perhaps doing nothing more strenuous than ordering a 'porto.' Faro main development occurred during Roman times, when it was developed as an important trading port, later it was overrun by the Moors in the 8th century and later it was conquered by Christians in 1249 who made it into an important provisional city and secured its place as part of Portuguese territory. In 1580 it became regional capital and was ransacked by the Earl of Essex sixteen years later. The town also had a thriving Jewish community (the first Portuguese book was printed using Jewish initiative) while the city also served as the site of the Episcopal see of the Bishop of the Algarve. An earthquake devastated the town in 1755 that required a comprehensive rebuilding program. The consequences of these developments may be seen, today in the town's picturesque blend of military defensive fortifications, historic and picture postcard buildings – roman ruins view for attention with gothic churches and Baroque streets. Moorish archways face 18th century churches, visitors pass orange tree lined streets on the way to a picture post card a harbor. The result is a rewarding experience for the camera snapper who finds time to emerge from their pool or off the greens. Naturally, as you can expect from a thriving tourists resort and university city, there is a wide and varied nightlife for all tastes, shopping for all wallets and cuisine for all palates. The theme parks and beaches are ideal for the sun lover and families, while action lovers can visit adventure theme parks or drive among the rolling hills. The location means that Spain is only a short drive away and for those that remain behind, there are always those greens open all year around. |
